Students of all ages will vary in ability so a step by step approach is the best way to manage the situation.

Start the student off with fairly straightforward tasks (in an office setting this might be photocopying or filing).

This will give you the chance to judge their ability in areas such as accuracy, attention span and enthusiasm. From this foundation you can gradually introduce more varied and demanding tasks.

The student can also do some work shadowing, attending meetings to observe what takes place.

This step by step approach gives the young person the chance to learn without getting out of their depth, and to progress to more challenging tasks. By the end of the two weeks more able students may be doing some quite involved work whilst less able youngsters will have the satisfaction of consolidating their performance.

A list of guides for the sort of work tasks that students can do in different business sectors (ie office, retail, care, garage etc) is available here. They also include suggested assignments

These Learning Frameworks illustrate what tasks the student might do and also provide some suggested assignments to help the student find out more about the business where he is doing his work experience.

Try and help the student understand how different work tasks contribute to the successful running of your company.
